Walking outside Bagley Hall and past the Drumheller Fountain, I headed toward the bus stop at NE Campus Parkway and 15th Avenue NE and observed my busy classmates heading all around the city. I stopped a few times to photograph things that caught my eye: a goose, a taxicab, a crowd a bus stop. What really caught my attention, though, was the winds that were picking up, and really cold, too.
The high clouds that I had seen all day were being replaced by grey, puffs sinking low into the sky and moving north-east at a rapid pace. Fearing that they would bring rain along with the chilly gusts, I paced anxiously while I waited for my bus to bounce down 15th Avenue.
The unstable atmosphere allowed a few glimpses of the sun, which cast a unique glow on the damp concrete and passed through the yellowing trees. While I don't care much for the cold weather, I realized today that I did miss the subtle change that fall brings. Long my least favorite season, on this occasion, I was able to appreciate the short beauty it does have.
When I finally returned home, one of my first tasks after turning on the heat and checking the weather forecast for tomorrow (morning thunderstorms?), was to put on warmer clothes and get a blanket to wrap up in while I sad in the cold and looked up last-minute airfares to beach vacation destinations.
Ah, fall.
I just love the 747-400. This is a Cargolux flight from Glasgow, heading toward SEA.
I'm heading north of Seattle to go to my mom's town, Stanwood. Anyone care to join?
And by the way... you should join my Stanwood flickr pool!
I kind of feel bad for this woman who was alone on the beach Saturday afternoon (maybe she likes the quiet?). I did like her retro-style outfit and that she's wearing shoes with a bit of heel while walking on bumpy ground.
Last Friday, I saw Susan Robb's new work Warmth, Giant Black Toobs, No. 3 at Volunteer Park, near my house in Seattle. I had read about the mysterious toobs on the cranky Slog and headed over there.
In the lawn outside the Seattle Asian Art Museum, there were a dozen or so toobs anchored to the ground, waving in the wind. The work is powered by the heat of the sun, and with the slightest breeze, the toobs went crazy. It was fascinating and fun. I am very glad I went.
More on the artist, here.
Today is primary election day in Washington State. If you're here, you have a few more hours to head to a polling place and fill out (or drop off) a ballot. This is one of the more minor elections in Washington, as there are no statewide races, and only local issues. In Seattle, there is a primary election for city councilmembers and races for the Port of Seattle. For the entire county, there are two park-bond measures. As a plus, you get to pick a party!
The day after I got home, I took the Sounder Train north to Everett to have dinner with my mom and stepdad. I got recognized by one of my former junior high school teachers (one that I liked)... and had a good meal. I got some bad family news and found out that my dog died while I was gone.
